Call for performance proposals! Belly Horror 2008!

Romka is pleased to announce a call for performers for the Belly Horror Show 2008!

The Belly Horror Show is a spooky belly dance variety show to be held Oct. 3rd & 4 th in Washington DC. The show features spooky, macabre, and horror or "B-movie monster" themed performances to delight, frighten, and amaze! Performances should be rooted in traditional or fusion belly dance style but can incorporate other performance arts such as burlesque, side/variety show, dark cabaret, etc. Musical submissions are also encouraged.

Belly Horror Show will run two nights, with the potential for two shows per evening.

Proposals will be accepted until Aug. 20th, 2008.

submission requirements:

Please submit a short video on dvd or youtube of a performance - preferably one similar in style or of the actual piece you are proposing. In addition, please include a short written proposal including:

Title:

Name of Primary Contact:

Primary contact email and phone number

Names of all performers participating:

Costuming:

Description of Piece: (1 paragraph describing your performance piece)

Performance History of Group: (other work you have done together or separately)

Technical needs/props used for performance:

Please mail submissions to: Romka c/o HIPS P.O. Box 21394 Washington DC 20009

Submissions must be postmarked by Aug. 11th, 2008

Romka will select pieces on basis of performance style, merit and show cohesion. Performers will be paid from show proceeds. Performers are required to assist in promotion of event. Sword Stylization DVD - International custumers

Is there anybody from outside the U.S. who tried to order the Sword Stylization DVD? First I contacted Insidious Media and was told to order through filmbaby.com. There I have the problem that I have to fill in a state even when I mark the adress as a German one. When I try to fill in a State the field gets blank again and I still get the error that I need to fill in a State. Anybody with the same problem? What can I do?

6 - 7:15pm Intro to belly dance:

Introductory class for people interested in seeing what this "belly dance thing" is all about! This class will focus on building a basic understanding of belly dance language, history & technique. For all ages and skill level. Not only will it help you learn about belly dance, but also but also build body awareness and confidence!

7:30 - 8:45pm Tribal fusion combos:
Due to popular demand there are now 2 Combos classes!
This class focused on learning short choreographed combinations of technical movements and saucy style for tribal improve dancing. This is a blend of traditional belly dance moves with a sassy jazz & hip hop flavor.

Classes are taught in Centreville VA, at Bella's Atropa studio.
The session is 12 weeks & cost is $185

I love, adore, practice to, and recommend Bella Donna's sword work DVD. I'm a die-hard old-school ATS dancer who has been looking for ATS-able sword work.

I love Tribalation's sword work (hope that Sabine will make a DVD), and love the Romka sword work as well. Just want to both recommend and thank you for sharing Romka's technique.

Traveling with swords

so it just occurred to me that we are teaching sword workshops in other cities... which people will need to bring their swords with them to....
so i wanted to make a post about the recommended way to travel with one's sword....

we travel with our swords quite extensively... and are complete freaks about keeping them flat & treating them right... so they stay in good shape & remain balanced

i recommend investing in a hard rifle case... that fits your sword. (you don't need a huge one, just one big enough to hold your weapon/prop)

soft cases are not good for taking on air planes, because of the way they treat your luggage...
and i don't really like them anyway because they do not give even support.. so your sword is more likely to get bent....

always store & transport your sword flat & well supported.. again to make sure it doesn't get bent.. that will throw off the balance.
keep a soft cloth in your case so it is easy to wipe off the oils form you skin, after handling....

so there you have it the answer to you question "how do i take my sword with me to Gothla or spirit of the tribes, so i can take Romka's workshop"

Sword safety question

Hi there!

I am new to sword dancing and I was hoping to get some advice.

Are the swords you dance with sharp or dull? If they are sharp, do you dull your swords or put a gaurd on them when practicing?

I ask because me and my troupemate are practicing for a sword duet. A few weeks ago, I was practicing, the sword fell off and I went to catch it. I did catch it...with the palm of my hand on the tip of the blade. Last night she cut her hand pretty bad and had to get 8 stitches :o(

Are we just being careless or is this common?

Any tips for sword safety would be greatly appreciated?

this moth we will work on drilling the cues that begin each combo, and incorporate traveling through space to switch up the lead!

You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Melanie and Karin began their history together as a collaboration for a New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom performance. From there, the duo Kassar was born. They have been dancing together as Kassar for the past seven years, all the while studying with numerous instructors of the tribal persuasion. Between them, they also bring a background rich in formal ballet training, West African dance, tango fusion and Indian dance technique. This has culminated in the development of their own unique, highly-acclaimed style of tribal bellydance. Kassar has since grown to both teach workshops and perform nationwide. Think you have mastered your isolations? Join Kassar for a workshop that will push your boundaries and train your mind and body to connect and move in unique ways. Be sure to check out these saucy tribal fusion combinations (mini choreography) that can be used for choreography or group improvisation.
Heavy in tribal technique, and infused with Indian, Hip Hop & jazz these combos will make you want to dance!

Sword Stylization:

Belladonna is a master of the sword dance. She is well known for her double sword work & her un-dulled scimitar balancing. Let her guide you through using your sword as a partner and infuse strength and purpose into your sword work. Swords are for more than just balancing they can be sensual and powerful partners.

Belly Horror Show seeks Performers!

Romka is pleased to announce a call for performers for the Belly Horror Show 2007!

The Belly Horror Show is a spooky belly dance variety show to be held Oct. 19th & 20th at the DCAC Theater in Adams Morgan. The show features spooky, macabre, and horror or "B-movie monster" themed performances to delight, frighten, and amaze! Performances should be rooted in traditional or fusion belly dance style but can incorporate other performance arts such as burlesque, side/variety show, dark cabaret, etc. Musical submissions are also encouraged.

Belly Horror Show will run two nights, Friday Oct. 19th & Friday Oct. 20th, 10pm - midnight at the DCAC Theater. Tech for performers will be Wednesday Oct. 17th.

Proposals will be accepted until Aug. 20th, 2007.
Submission requirements:

Please submit a short written proposal that includes the information below. In addition, please submit a short video or dvd of a performance - preferably one similar in style or of the actual piece you are proposing.

6-7:15pm Tribal combos:
Class focused on learning short choreographed combinations of technical movements and saucy style for tribal improv dancing. This is a blend of traditional belly dance moves with a modern hip hop flavor.

7:30-8:30 pm Strength training and drills:
Having trouble with your isolations? Need to build quad strength for floor work? Then this is the class for you!
One hour of butt kicking, body movements and exercises to build strength and flexibility specifically for tribal fusion belly dance.

8:45- 10pm BellaTrix student troupe rehearsal

Wednesdays

6:00- 7:15pm Tribal & fusion belly dance:
This is an introduction to the vocabulary & technique of American Tribal Style, and tribal fusion choreography. This class's purpose is to give you a strong foundation of the movements & technique of Tribal and fusion styles of belly dance.

7:30-8:45 Isolate and flow:
Beyond the introduction to belly dance, this class will help you further your ability to isolate. As well as introduce layering and combining movements enabling you to better express the music through your dance.

9:00-10:00
